The day I got runned over

Ok Here is my story from 62?? yrs ago. I was down in Blackford KY at my Great Grand Dads place while school was out for the summer. I had actully lived there at times during WW2 and the post war yrs when my Dad was out of work up in Indiana, er Evansville and had become strongly attached to the folks there and abouts in Blackford, a farming area and was well known around the area as my Great Grand Dad was a very well known fellow in his own right as the local Sheriff (Retired) and the really tough one for yrs. Any ways I was out helping do some haying and I was driving a team of one horse and one mule puling a wagon bwtween the bales and picking up the bales for a trip to the barn a short drive up the road. I was doing fine and when I got to the end of a pair of rows and had got the hay stacked on the wagon I proceeded to make a large wide turn to go back through another set of bales to keep the loading going. Well not being very up on my schooling in physics I just did not realize that I was turning downhill onto a slight slope that was going down hill and I was sitting on the bales I had stacked on the front three high and you can guess what happened next. The bales went down onto the teams rear ends and I went with them. I ended up on the wagon tongue astradlle of it just like in the movies. The team had started running as soon as the bales hit their rear ends and I had of course lost hold of the reins. I can recall this as if it was yesterday because I actually thought I was gonna die that day. The team was really hitting the ground beside me and those trace chains were really poppin me as they flopped around. They were headed for a road that cut through the field that went to their place and that was the problem. The road was cut down into the field and was a good 15-20 ft lower than the field where they were headed for. The loader guys were trying to run us down but they couldnt run that well on the field. Anyway I started thinking of what to do because I knew I had to get off that tongue before they got to the road or I might get really hurt or killed. I made up my mind and swung under that tongue and hung upside down for just a short time to get set and then I just let go and hit the ground under the wagon and rolled and slid to a stop. I couldnt move cause I had the wind knocked out of me and everyone who had been watching thought I was dead laying there. Pretty soon they caught the team and that was good. But what was coming was not. Someone had told my Mother who was well known in that 400 folks town came stormin into that field and was just a wreck cause someone had said I was daid and gone and she was really out of it till she saw me and talked to me. Then she lit into those men who were there working the bailer and not really close to us haulers and I cant tell you all she said to them but it wasnt pretty I recall. Needless to say I did not make anymore money that summer cause they did not want to have MaMa go ballistic anymore, of course they were scared to because we got away with what could have been had a very bad outcome but for some help from afar maybe. I am not religious but that was pretty close. Them rear hoofs and single trees bouncin around my head and them iron rim wheels goin by could have really done what for if my luck had not been good that day. My Grand Mother who was the Postmistress at the little Post Office there in town told me many times about how many conversations started up there in that little post office lobby about the boy who got runned over and lived to tell about it. Heck, this one and a couple more times will be about as much as I have told it out. It only took a few minutes to happen and as a kid that aint much to talk about. Old Jack Conway who was one of the older guys probably 18 or so at the time died in Marion Ky a few yrs ago and I did not know it until a few weeks ago. I had thought that I should go see him again a while back before he died but like everything else it got put off until it was too late. Wish I had gone now. But thats my story of being runned over by a team and wagon. Dave
