The old M

I was born in 1945 in Cincinnati Ohio.As soon as I got old enough my parents always let me spend the summers at my Uncle Dave's farm in Northern KY. The summer of 1954 he brought home a Super MTA, which I thought was the biggest tractor in the whole world and the most facinating piece of equipment I had ever seen. Of course I was too young to drive it but I spent many an hour standing on the drawbar while he worked the tractor. Later on I learned to operate the tractor, mostly doing haying chores like mowing and raking hay. I graduated from high school, went to college, got drafted and spent 2 years in the army, and worked for 30 years, time passed and I lost contact with Uncle Dave. I new he had moved to Florida but he still owned the farm in Kentucky. In the spring of 1992 I stopped by the old farm just to look at it and he was sitting on the porch. We visited and drank iced tea all afternoon and I finally said hey Unk what happened to the old M? He said its still up in the sheep barn. We walked up the hill to look at it and it was a horrible sight. Tires rotted off, covered with bird droppings and completely neglected. I chided him about letting such a good tractor fall into disrepair.Since I now knew he planned to spend the entire summer at the farm I told him I would stop back by before fall. In late September I Stopped to see Unk again and I thought I saw a new red tractor up by the barn and I asked him what he had bought. He said you want to walk up and take a look at her? Well he had spent the whole summer getting the M restored and that is what I had seen from a distance. We spent the afternoon driving it around and admiring it. As I was leaving he said what are you going to do with it? That was his way of giving the tractor to me. He said he just wanted someone to take care of it when he was gone. I drove the tractor to my farm, I use it every summer to rake hay and bush hog and grade the driveway. Dave Iler passed away a few years ago but I remember him every time I slide the barn door open and see my old M. Ellis Kinney
