Waiting for an 8N

For many years I have wanted to buy a Ford 8N. The ones that I seen all look worned and needed repairs. So in 1974 in my travels for a firm in Springfield, Mo. I traveled most of the states in the south, and notice that a 8N (wasn't sure) setting back in a barn under a cover on a small plot of land just outside Monroe, Louisiana. I traveled this area about 4 times a year and kept an eye on this tractor that was in the barn. I thought many times that I would stop and ask if the person would sell it, but was always running short of time. For 15 years I keep an eye on this tractor, and in May 1989 I made my trip to Louisiana and there it was setting in the front yard. I came to a sudden stop and turned around and drove in the driveway. I black gentleman came out the house. I ask him if he was selling the tractor, and he told me he had to sell it, as he was 84 years old, and was moving to Arizona to live with his sister. He had just set it in the yard that morning. I ask him if he would take 500. 00 for it. He told me he had been offered a 1, 000. 00. . I told him I only had 945. 00 on me, and offered this amount. He told me he would take it. I wrote up a plain paper 'bill of sale' that I was paying him 945. 00 for the 1949 8N Serial #196380 Then came the problem how I was to get it back to Springfield, Mo some 400 miles. My best guess was to go rent a 'lowboy' trailer and pull it with my Buick car. But that wouldn't be a smart move, as the weight of the tractor was too much. So I went on to see my customer in Monroe, La who made trips to our factory to pick up their merchandise. They told me they would haul the tractor for the cost of the gas to Springfield, Mo. And they would haul the 8N the next week. The cost was 100. 00 for gas. Not only did I get the 8N for 945. 00, the black gentleman had the Ford bottom plow and a grader blade which he gave to me. So the 8N was now in Springfield in a garage on 2 acres of land, and not much use for it. I polished and waxed the tractor, and replaced the Spark Plug cables, and radiator hoses as they were still the original ones. Changed the oil and filter, and the antifreeze. Did notice the engine was rough at idle, so I bought me some carbon remover. And the best there is, was the Yamaha Outboard 'Ring Free' that is used in outboard engines to remove carbon buildup. And I put in a 8oz. bottle in the 10 gallon tank and drove the tractor 10 miles at 4 speed rate and the carbon remover worked very well. In 1997 I moved to Coffeyville, Kansas to my wife's parents 10 acres, where it in use today April 2001. I replaced the rear tires in February this year, and will replace the front ones soon. I live here in good company, just a block away lives Joe Funk, and another block away lives Bernard Wade who came from Ohio in 1940 with Howard and Joe Funk to start up Funk Manufacturing. The tractor still has the orginal Spark Plugs, and Coil, points and condenser, and thermostat. . The tractor was worth waiting for all the years I drove by it in Louisiana.

Today's Featured Article - It Can't Be Done! - A Tractor Story - by Neil Campbell. I'll never forget the time back when I was a boy baling hay on our Farm in Big Rapid, Michigan. The most memorable event that took place was a trip up the steepest incline on the farm pulling an old New-Idea baler with a pony-motor for power and a haywagon. I had just talked my Dad into buying an old John Deere B with 6-speeds ahead and I was real proud of it, except it was a little smaller than the Case tractor that we normally ... [Read Article]
