J. D. s next door

I was raised on a dairy farm near East Troy Wi. At one time Grampa owned the livery stable in East Troy and he owened the first car in the East Troy area. We had a Ford 2N and two Ford 8N, s plus two teams of horses. In 1953 we added a Ford Jubilee to the N, s and the horses went down the road. In 1956 we added a Ford 860 to the N, s and the Jubilee. The guy next door always had J. D. 's. I remember he had two J. D. G's. Then a 60 and two 70's and finally a 430C that he cleaned the barns with, a 630 and two 730's. In the fall he would go to Montana and Wyoming and buy yearling Hereford steers and ship them by railroad cars to the cattle pens at Beulah Station and then drive the steers by horseback down Highway 24 to his farm, and feed them out. In the spring, the steers left his farm enroute to the Chicago stock yards via horseback and railcars. When I was 10 years old I got to drive his J. D. 60 and I was hooked! I knew rigth then and ther that thoses Herefords and the J. D., s where and better deal then our Fords and our milk cows. So at the ripe old age of 15 I headed to Wyoming and cowboyed for 3 years. Plus I rodeoed for 3 years. Then I traded a 100 a month, room board and laundry job for a 78 a month, room board jod and I had to do my own laundry. Plus I had to were a blue uniform. The last year I was in the Air Force I laid in a bed at Scott Air Force Base hospital. The hospital was at the edge of the base and I could see a farm over the fence with a J. D. 630 and Hereford cattle. Again the guy next door with J. D. s Thirty five years later, after a stop at the U. of Wi collage of Ag and playing cops and robbers while putting a ranch together, I am the guy next door. A 430C, a 630, and two 730D. s, Hereford cattle, and a good saddle horse, plus a 1946 Jeep to go to town for coffee. All it takes is my Air Force retirement, my Sherrif's dept retirement and the wife working full time at Wal-Mart to keep the ranch afloat.
