Plowing With the Neighbors in the Early 70s
I am a RED guy, I have and 1206 which I bought new, and that is what I used in the plowin with my neighbors. We usually did the plowing in the fall in my one of my 100 acre fields(Nice long flat rounds). First of all I will explain what everyone else had. It was pretty common to have a 100+ hp tractor in my area. My neighborhood was pretty non brand based, There was me on my 1966 Farmall 1206. I still remember when they delievered that tractor new out to my place, I shed a tear it was so beautiful, yet in a manly way. Then there was the Green guys of the neighborhood. There was Don Danielson with a couple of JD's(him and his son always were in the plowing match). Don had a 1972 4020 Diesel, and there was his son on the old 1959 JD 830. another green guy was Neil Evenson with the 1963 JD 5010(damn big tractor). Then there was the Oliver/MM guys to the north of me(Brothers Bob Huntz & Bill Huntz each had there own farms). Bob had a 1974 Oliver 1955, and Bill had a 1969 MM G1000. also there was Kevin Odela with the Allis-Chalmers of the neighborhood (never liked the AC stuff), He had a big 1965 AC D-21. There was also a J. I Case guy in the area, he was Harry Berg, he had a big 1969 Case 1030 standard Diesel and last but not least there was Karl Ulick on the brand new 1974 International Harvester 1568 WOW (v8 Diesel). So to recap all the tractors there was me on the IH 1206, Don Danielson on the JD 4020, his son on the JD 830, Neil Evenson on the JD 5010, Bob Huntz on the 1955 Oliver, Bill Huntz on the MM G1000, Kevin Odela on the AC D-21, Harry Berg on the Case 1030 standard, Karl Ulick on the IH 1568. This was quite the line up when we all parked at my farmplace to have lunch. That is a unique sound to hear 9 tractors sit and idle while we all ate lunch(The JD 830 and the 1568 were always the ones that could be heard over the others. When lunch was over, it was usually me that led the way to the field that was about 1 mile away(quite the parade). When we arrived there we all got kind of cocky and would rev our engines as we all prepared to turn soil. We all sat and watched as Karl with the big 1568 started striking out the land, we all sat and smiled as the new binder sang away pulling the plow. We all got anxious when we all hopped on our tractors, I started the 'plow parade' with the 1206, oh the turbo was whistling a sweet tune that time. Next was Don's son on the 830, He would throttle way down and drop the plow and then throttle up and hear the 'POP-POP-POP-POP' of the old 2 banger. after him was his Dad on there new 4020, with powershift. After Don was Harry on the 1030, this tractor was pretty plain jane and there was nothin special about it(sure could plow though). After Harry was Bill on the big MM G1000, in close behind him was Bob on the 1955. Then after Bob was Neil with the big 5010 (quite the plowin machine). Then bringing up the rear was the big Allis (A** Cracker) with Kevin Odela at the reins. We had that field done in 1 hour(100 acres).
