A Tractor Story

Ever since I could recall my grandfather owned two tractors. A McCormick Farmall Super H and an International Harvester B-414 diesel. As a little kid the size of the Super H was staggering. When my Grandaddy died in 1993 my dad did not want two tractors, for he could only drive one at a time. With the high gear not operable in Super H and unstable tricycle steering the 414 stayed. A few years ago I earned a degree in diesel technology and was able with the help of classmates to rebuild the engine. The engine was completely, I mean completely, worn out. When you cranked it the oil pressure gauge never changed from Zero. If you operated the tractor for 4 hours it used a quart of oil: two quarts in 8 hours. I have since gone through the tractor from front to back. I replaced the bearings in the steering box, which by the way would make a half a revolution before the front tires would turn. In addition, the brakes were gone and I replaced the brake disc and the shaft seals. Later on I discovered that at full throttle the throttle was not all the way forward. With no parts available for the throttle linkage, I had to completely re-engineer the linkage. Today, the tractor is probably the best example of a B-414 in existence that I know of. I deeply regret that dad sold the Farmall for as popular as they have become now days. Now, I am trying to start a side business specializing in the repair of B-414 diesel tractors.
