My Farmall A

I grew up on a 2500 acre farm where my dad always had the latest equipment. In the summer though, when school got out I would go up north for a month or two and help out my Grandparents on their farm. My Grandpa had a Farmall H, which I used to haul the hay wagons in with, and that is when I knew I wanted a Farmall someday. My dad said I was too young to drive a tractor, but my Grandpa let me drive all over, as long as I never told my dad. Eventually my parents sold their farm to development, and my grandfather retired and sold his farm. Twenty years later I was visiting my Grandpa and he said he always liked his first tractor, which was a Farmall A. So I went out looking and finally found this old A that needed everything. I bought it and brought it home and put it in my shop and worked on it all winter after I got home from work and the chores were done. (I have an 80 acre farm now) I was going to mint this tractor out and then give it to my Grandpa and take him in the parade the next summer in out hometown. I stripped it to bare metal, tore it completely apart, rebuilt it from the ground up all myself. I painted each piece separately with 3 coats of PPG Delstar, then reassembled the tractor and painted it again to touch up the bolt heads and any little scratches. I rewired it 12 volt with an alternator. Then I almost had it done, when the mag was junk so I ordered a distributor conversion kit. While I was waiting, my Grandpa died. I was only a couple weeks from having this better than new tractor done, when he died. He never knew what I was doing, since it was going to be a surprise. I even bought a new 18 foot trailer that was red, just to bring it to him on. Anyway my plan failed and he will never know what I was doing. I finished the tractor and couldn't bear to even drive it, so I sold it to my neighbor for 1500. I must have had close to 5000 in it, but it had to go. I know it was dumb, but it was to be a gift that I couldn't end up giving so it didn't matter. Well I learned alot building it, and now I have the bug again a year later, so now I am going to find a Farmall and build this one for me and my Grandpa!
