Younger Years

Many years ago, I was five or six at the time, my family lived on a farm in Wyo. My dad owned a Super C Farmal. Needless to say every time the tractor started up I was there. I would ride on the gas tank with my feet on the battery and my hands on the two head lights. I would ride there and watch him work that marvelous machine. As I said I was very little and I would get very sleepy while riding there. Well as things go, one day I fell asleep and off the tractor. My dad was disking that day and watching the back of the tractor. The way things happened the big rear wheel ran over my left arm and stopped just short of running over my chest. I can still see my dads fearful look when he stopped and told me get up. When I explained the tractor was on my arm, his face took on new meaning as he backed off my arm and jumped down to gently feel my arm for broken bones. Finding none, he quikly thanked the lord and put me back on that tractor. Some time latter I was riding on that gas tank with my older brother while he was driling (seeding). As luck would have it I fell asleep again and this time I wasn't so lucky and the rear tire run over my little body. I remember him carring me to the car but thats it. I had two very young bouts with that tractor. One would think that I would sign off having any thing to do with them, but to this day I own a 240 IH and am quite proud of it. I hope to get it restored, but it is a working tractor for me and I still enjoy riding in that seat. I still think of the times I rode with Dad and my brothers. The memories keepcoming back and you know I wouldn't trade them for anything.

Today's Featured Article - It Can't Be Done! - A Tractor Story - by Neil Campbell. I'll never forget the time back when I was a boy baling hay on our Farm in Big Rapid, Michigan. The most memorable event that took place was a trip up the steepest incline on the farm pulling an old New-Idea baler with a pony-motor for power and a haywagon. I had just talked my Dad into buying an old John Deere B with 6-speeds ahead and I was real proud of it, except it was a little smaller than the Case tractor that we normally ... [Read Article]
