My First Tractor

I grew up around farming and have always been fascinated by big equipment, especially tractors. My brother Scott and my cousins Mark and Paul have attended several tractor shows each summer for many years. Mark owns a 1949 Farmall H and Paul owns a 1952 Ford 8N. This past summer Mark and Paul have started taking their tractors to shows so I became a little more involved. More than once I have been standing next to the Ford or Farmall when someone would pass by and say, 'Nice looking tractor you have there.' Instead of explaining that it didn't belong to me, I would nod my head and say, 'Thank you very much.' At these shows I would look at the different tractors and dream of which one I would like to own. Trying to be practical, I would look at those tractors that I could trailer behind my Ford Ranger pickup. The John Deere H always caught my eye as a possibility. This fall, after taking the Farmall to the Corn Festival in Wilmington, Ohio, I asked Mark if I could 'invest' in the Farmall. That way I could put my name on it as part owner and when someone said, 'Nice tractor you have there', I could truly say, 'Thank you, I am part owner.' Mark said, 'If you find a tractor you want, I will find a way to store it in my barn' The next day I was looking at the classified ads on Yesterday's Tractors and the very first one was a 1945 John Deere H. It looked to be in good shape and the price was within the range of what I had to spend. With Mark and Paul's help, I bought it and brought it to Mark's house. We have already had a lot of fun tinkering with this and that. I decided to take it down to my aunt and uncle's house the day after Thanksgiving. I pulled into a gas station to get gas. A gentleman at the adjacent pump gave the tractor a good looking over and said, 'Nice looking tractor you have there.' It felt really good to truthfully say, 'Thank you very much.'
