Younger Years II

I remember getting up to work with my dad and brothers on that old farm in Wyo. I was only five or six I think. Theres not a lot a little kid can do on the farm but never-the-less we all had jobs. Mine was to drive the tractor, a Super C Farmall. You'd think that my experiance of being run over by that Super C (previous 'Younger years' article) would stop me from ever wanting to get near a tractor again. Not so, I so loved the sound and fun of driving that I couldn't set still when ever I heard that old tractor start. I could sit on the seat and my feet wouldn't touch the deck, to reach the peddles I had to push the steering wheel up over my head and push the clutch in to shift. Then jump back in the seat. I was also hard of hearing and when my brothers would yell directions or when to shift. Well, things just got a little fruststrating for all concerned. My Dad and Mom always seemed to know my feelings and had more understanding of my handicap than my brothers did. I remember one day my brother and I were dropping feed hay, he was yelling at me and kept yelling 'NO wrong gear', then.... I just had enough. So I put the old tractor in neutral, climbed off the seat and walked into the house. He followed me yelling, and theatened me to get back on the tractor. Mom over heard him and wanted to know what's the matter, so I said 'If he keeps yelling at me I won't work for him'. My Mom just laughed and laughed at me and my brother. When we moved from the old farm in Wyo. We had to leave the old tractor and equipment there. I coxed my dad to bring the old Super C to Utan where we lived. Someone had cut all the wires and broke the glass sediment bowl, there was a lot of other damage. She looked like she was dead. I memember my dad and brother working on it just to see if she could ever go again. When she fired up I jumped for joy. Needless to say, I grew up the years to follow working that old tractor and earning money doing custom work for the area we lived. I'll never really forget the love we shared or the years that followed. I too, talked to that old tractor and she seemed to understand me. She's long gone now, I now own a 240 IH. My wife said I'm like a little boy when Im out on my tractor. At 55 I guess I am!
