Unexpected Benefit

I have been an antique tractor owner for a little more than a year. I used this forum to write about my first tractor last December. My first tractor was a bare bones 1945 John Deere H. Last June I traded that H for a 1946 John Deere H that had electric start, PTO, hydraulics, and those coveted fenders. Both of these tractors have given me many benefits. I have met dozens of nice people at tractor shows. I have enjoyed waving to people in tractor parades. I have really enjoyed participating in tractor games that many shows put on for the participants. But the most important benefit I have received with the tractor is outside the realm of tractor shows. I am a elementary physical education teacher. Last school year, amoung the new students to our school, there was Jordan and Taylor. I try to make a connection with all new students. The connection that linked Taylor and Jordan to me was John Deere. Both are very interested in John Deeres. Their grandparents farm in South Dakota and John Deere is their tractor of choice. Just about every day, Taylor and I have a conversion about John Deeres. Either it is about my H or about a story his father or grandfather told him about growing up on the farm. Now, I knew that owning an antique tractor was going to be fun. But I never would have thought that owning one would allow me to connect with a student the way I have connected with Taylor and Jordan.
