New tractor purchase

Well, over the past 25 years, I have bought somewhere around 50 tractors. Never had a problem, but this last one takes the cake! I was working around Gallup, N.M. a few weeks ago, and one of my employees told me about finding a John Deere tractor for sale. Price was 400, and said it was old. I doubted it, but went to look for myself. It was a 1948 Model M JD. I had been looking for a parts tractor for my wifes 48 M for a month or so, so it fit the bill. Contacted the owner by phone and found that they wanted more for the tractor (of course) but negotiations led to an agreed price of 600. I met the daughter and gave her cash and received a receipt for the money. Next day I drove out with my trailer and had to winch the tractor on. Got on the highway and made it 1/4 mile before two old Navajo men stopped me. Did I mention this was on the reservation? Anyway, a 75 year old man wanted to know why his tractor was on my trailer, because he had a bill of sale at home showing he had bought the tractor 25 years ago from his mother (the original owner), and it was not for sale. 3 hours, and three police vehicles later I was told to take the tractor to the old mans house and leave it. After 3 weeks of trying to get my money back (and did) and negotiating with the real owner, I made a deal to buy the tractor for 800. Didn't want to pay that much, but promised the wife I would restore a tractor for her. Upon arriving to load the tractor, the old man told me he had found some things that go with the tractor. A new JD coil in the box he had bought 25 years ago, a 2 bottom breaking plow, and both original rear wheel weights. He kicked them in for nothing so I guess I came out better off than I thought. Truth is, I'll never buy anything off the reservation again, for apparently this thing happens all the time. Good luck in your tractor hunting, just stay off the res. Jerry
